What's the Maximum Distance Receptacles are Installed in a Single-Family Dwelling?
A home inspection is a necessary evil that every homeowner in Atlanta has to undergo to receive a review. A positive review will help in increasing the value of your home and is also essential to ensure that your home is a safe place to stay for your family and you. By asking an experienced electrical contractor in Atlanta to check your home wiring and getting them to install electrical receptacles at a proper distance as per the National Electrical Code (NEC) guidelines, you can be assured that you will pass your home inspection with flying colors.
Are you moving to a new single family dwelling unit and want to know more about the general receptacle placement laws as per the NEC guidelines? If so, read on:
- Section 210.60(B) of the NEC code specifies that receptacles should be installed on usable wall spaces in such a manner so that no two points along the floor line are more than 1.8 m or 6 feet away from an outlet. Usable wall space refers to a distance of 3 feet or 900m of space that doesn't include any windows or doorways or any other permanent installation that could decrease the wall space. In single dwelling units, you cannot increase the distance between the receptacles because of the furniture layout.
- While applying the NEC guidelines of Section 210.52(A), care should be taken to make sure that the minimum number of receptacles is used in a particular section. For example, in a room having a size of 13.5x17.5sq feet, the minimum number of receptacles installed should be five.
- The receptacles in the room should be connected by Atlanta electrical contractors in such a manner so that the white/silver terminal wire of receptacles is connected to the white wire of the electrical circuit, while the brass screw should be connected to the red or black circuit wire.
- All the receptacles used in the home have to be tamper proof. Receptacles should be installed at a minimum distance of 39 inches from wash basins, shower stalls, and bathtubs in the bathroom.
- Arc fault circuit interrupters should be installed in all the sleeping units in the home, while a sufficient number of both 20 and 15 amp receptacles should be installed in the kitchen area of single family dwelling unit so that no point is more than 900m apart from the other along a horizontal floor line. At least one 15/20 A receptacle should be installed on a fixed island counter having a dimension of 600m or more. Dedicated receptacle circuits are needed for dishwashers, microwaves, and refrigerators.
Ask your electrician in Atlanta to keep the above NEC guidelines in mind while installing receptacles in your home.
