1939 Washington Quarter

Time for Change

The United States Congress is as soon as again contemplating several issues relating to our currency and coins. These embody the Dollar, Quarter, and Cent. Many in congress want to stay with the current designs, and cross laws so that they can't be changed.

The first regulation governing coin designs dates again to 1792. Many during this time wanted our nation's coins to bear the image of George Washington. Washington was very adamant in opposition to this idea, referring to a coin bearing the image of an individual to being monarchical. In September of 1792 the Morris invoice proposed our coins bear the emblematic image of Liberty. Rep. John Page, who served underneath Washington during the French and Indian wars not only echoed the presidential objection, however identified that nevertheless pleased they could be with the incumbent, there was no motive to consider that their descendants can be happy with a few of his successors. Other members of Congress insisted that it was no actual compliment to put a picture of Washington on a coin. The basic ideas of coinage design were not for honoring people. It was hoped by the founding fathers that our coinage would symbolize and honor all of America. Woman Liberty was chosen as the design as a result of she represented considered one of our foremost rights. A symbol that every American could understand and embrace.

This invoice was signed into legislation on April 2, 1792. This act is the idea for subsequent American coinage legal guidelines; it is called "Statute One".

The legislation of September 26, 1890 acknowledged that adjustments in the designs of United States cash cannot be made extra usually than each twenty-five years with out congressional approval. Any design circulating twenty-five years or more could possibly be changed with out their approval. Since that date, all denominations have modified, many instances with out the necessity of congressional action. At the moment, congress is infringing upon this law. The Jefferson 5 cent coin by the new law will revert back to an image of Jefferson and Monticello in 2006. Congress can be contemplating a bill that will require the picture of Washington to turn into everlasting on the Quarter, together with Lincoln on the Cent. They're following the early logic of Henry Ford. Mr. Ford thought that one car in one color was good enough for the masses. American's did not accept this logic then, and we shouldn't be forced to accept it now.

We as Individuals love and embrace change. We anticipate this in our fashions, vehicles, televisions, and in our everyday lives. Would any of us be completely happy if the producers of America determined that the present design have been one of the best for us, and never once more created something new or completely different? Are we so conceited to imagine that our choices right now are suitable and acceptable for future generations?

The first design change of the Washington quarter passed off in 1999. This was the first main change since 1932. The United States Mint estimates that greater than 100 million American's gather the State Quarters. That equates to 1 in 3 of American's accumulating coins. The proof is plain for all to see. What's going to happen to the one hundred million plus American's that are presently accumulating these coins when the designs revert back to the same as they've been? What would be the purpose to continue acquire coins? The United States Mint and the Bureau of Engraving earn a lot of their earnings by reissuing currency that's now not in circulation. If our coins and foreign money are by no means again modified, why would anybody wish to pull it out of circulation? This may require the federal government to wait for them to wear out. Whereas currency has a mean circulation of 18 to 24 months, coinage can circulate up to 38 years.

Most Americans right now have only witnessed a few minor design adjustments in our currency. The last main change earlier than the State Quarter program, was changing Franklin on the half dollar with Kennedy. Now we have five of six coins bearing the likeness of a president. A brand new invoice is at the moment being heard on capital hill concerning a brand new dollar design. This can make our sixth and last coin bearing a presidential design. The invoice would create a brand new circulating commemorative coin honoring every president in their order of holding office. Most American's would agree that all of those males don't should be honored on this fashion. Our founding fathers knew this.
