Another way to come out of the desert is to crack open your "piggy bank", the one belonging to your children and grandchildren too. You can also empty your mother's "cookie jar". Spread what you find on the kitchen table and sort out all the U.S. quarters and dimes that were minted up to 1964.
Today Silver closed at about $35.80 a troy ounce (this is about 32.15 ounces). A U.S. quarter weighs about 6.25 grams. You need about 5.4 quarters to equal an ounce. Each quarter contains roughly 90% Silver. The result is that one U.S. quarter has a real value of about $6.41. Your math might be different. The formula you should use is:
$35.80(Silver price) x .0321507466(Troy Ounce) x 6.25 (grams) x .90 (Silver amount)= about $ 6.47 each in value. This is just a sample exercise.
As the Silver price goes up, the mathematical formula changes!
The same story can be told about the Roosevelt Dime minted between 1946 to 1964. Each dime weighs about 2.5 grams. Silver makes up 90%, the rest is copper. Each coin has a melt down value today of about $2.48 . I would say, start counting now!
You can do and you should do any or all of the above suggestions.
