Value of US silver dollars to sell?
I have a small collection of Morgan and Peace U.S. silver dollars. Given the high price of silver nowadays, can I expect to sell these coins (assuming they don't have rare dates/mintmarks, and the condition is just average), for the "spot" price of an ounce of silver to a coin dealer? Thanks for any input!
Answer:
No, you won't get 'spot' from a dealer. Dealers need to make a profit. Coins with no additional collector value are called 'junk silver', even if the coins aren't off-grade. Dealers in my area are paying 25 to 26 times face value for 90% junk dimes, quarters and halves, 30 times face for Morgans and 28 times face for Peace dollars.
The silver dollars are sold to bullion buyers that come into the shop for three to five dollars over spot - $35 to $37 each. The junk silver is bagged in units of $100, $500 or $1,000 face and sold at premiums to spot. But the time they have to hold the coins before sale is risk of prices falling sharply in a matter of days. They can't afford to pay spot.
